My Review of groOrganic’s Garden Planner

What is it exactly?

From the website . . .
"...Organic gardening is a popular subject today.  Many are becoming aware of the benefits of eating organically and growing vegetables and fruit in their own backyards.  This is not a new concept.  Rather it is a very OLD concept.  The “conventional” gardening and farming of today relies on the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.  “Organic” gardening and farming restricts the use of artificial chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, organic growers rely on developing a healthy fertile soil and growing a mixture of crops.  This is the way our grandparents or great grandparents grew their produce.
Unfortunately, we have to re-learn how to grow food.  This is a lost art to many inexperienced gardeners.   We have many sources to help begin a new gardening project if we have the desire to do so.  New ideas to make gardening easier for the novice as well as for the experienced gardener are readily available on the Internet and in gardening books.  How-To videos will even show you step-by-step the building of raised planter beds.   But then what?  Wouldn’t it be great if you could just type in your zip code and have a gardening program remind you when to plant and when to harvest?   Wouldn’t it be great to enjoy the convenience of growing your own produce without the backbreaking weeding of the past?
groOrganic, an innovative company, will provide 'full service' vegetable gardening for people with little time or experience.  groOrganic can supply complete raised bed vegetable gardens installed and maintained by professionals or will consult with a client who just needs a little advice.
groOrganic offers the most up to date gardening design and maintenance software technology.  Our Garden Planner:

Review…

I’ve recently had the pleasure of reviewing the groOrganic Garden Planner.  Please read on . . .

Packaging & Presentation

The groOrganic Garden Planner is a web-based replica of your personal garden.  It is easily accessible through their website, groOrganic.

Ease of Use

The groOrganic Garden Planner is very user friendly, however it takes some computer knowledge to know what all the buttons do.  I took some pictures of my personal garden plans, so you can see how I did it.

There are some very helpful videos on the home screen, where it teaches you how to use the program, and the ease of making a successful garden.

Next, as you become familiar with the planner, you get to choose your location of where your garden is located geographically.

After that, you select / alter your frost dates.  The program has it already set particular to your location, but if you are experiencing a change in the frost dates, it gives you the opportunity to change them if need be.

Now, you can start planning your garden.

I started with my side vegetable garden.  The neat thing is you can put in your dimensions, and when you click on ‘ADD PLANTS’, the plant is put in a box for the exact growth space it needs.  This way, you can plant what you want without overcrowding the garden.  As you can see, the bar above the garden allows you to add plants, and they have everything you can think of!

There is also a ‘Settings’ button, which allows you to change a few things about your garden to personalize it for your liking.

Lastly, another feature that I would love to talk about is the ‘Plant List’.  You can access this by clicking on the ‘Plant List’ button next to the print button.  This feature brings up the following window, which tells me when to start sowing indoors, transfer outdoors, and harvest. This is very helpful!

Pros
  • Highly interactive
  • Sends email reminders
  • Allows the beginner to reap great benefits/rewards of gardening
  • LOTS of member benefits

Summary

I really like the groOrganic Garden Planner.  This is something I’ve done in the past, but I’ve always done it on paper.  Now that society has switched to electronic everything, it makes it super easy to visualize exactly what I want to do.  No more mistakes, and I get all the help I need thanks to all of the features of the groOrganic Garden Planner.  I really like how it promotes self-gardening, and provides all the information necessary to be successful with it.
