My Review of Here, Home, Hope by Kaira Rouda
What is it about?
From the website . . .
"...Here, Home, Hope by author Kaira Rouda is the fictional story of one woman's courageous journey through midlife crisis and personal reinvention - all told with a sense of heart and humor.
Kelly Mills Johnson becomes restless in her thirty-ninth year. An appetite for more forces her to take stock of her ordinary middle-American existence and her neighbors’ seemingly perfect lives. Her marriage to a successful attorney has settled into a comfortable routine, and being the mother of two adorable sons has been rewarding but exhausting. Meanwhile, Kelly’s own passions lie wasted. She eyes with envy the lives of her two best friends, Kathryn and Charlotte, both beautiful, successful businesswomen who seem to have it all. Kelly takes charge of her life, devising a midlife makeover plan.
Here, Home, Hope will surely appeal to readers of chick lit and other women’s fiction titles who are ready to transition into something new in their own life..."
Review…
I’ve recently had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Here, Home, Hope by Kaira Rouda! Please read on . . .
Characters:
- Kelly Mills Johnson- Main character, struggling to find her true self. Lots of complications along her journey to self-actualization.
- Melanie- Kathryn’s anorexic teenage daughter that Kelly tries to fix. Symbolic of Kelly’s inner self.
- Kathryn- Close friend of Kelly’s. Kathryn is Melanie’s rich mother. Also going through a divorce.
- Charlotte- Close friend of Kelly’s. Charlotte is a real-estate agent who hires Kelly for staging houses. Also symbolic of the perfection that Kelly wishes to achieve.
- David & Sean- Kelly’s children. They are growing up, and Kelly is having a hard time coping.
- Patrick- Kelly’s husband. Support shoulder, and the rock of their marriage.
- Beth (Bony Beth)- Long-lost friend of Kelly’s. She gives Kelly hope throughout the storyline.
Plot:
To me, this story was about survival. The main character, Kelly Mills Johnson is torn in a part of her life and seems to be stuck where she does not want to be. She sets plans and goals to somehow accompany her throughout her journey of the rest of her life. She is realizing her children are growing, and she needs to be closer to her husband. Everybody around her seems to have the ‘perfect life’ that she wishes and dreams of having. However, it is really ironic when all of her friends’ worlds come crashing down on her doorstep.

Key Notes:
Here, Home, Hope is divided into three sections. It is a very humorous tale of the thoughts and passions of many women in real life. A lot of women feel the urge that there is something ‘missing’ from their lives, and spend lots of time trying to figure out how to achieve the release of those empty feelings. Here, Home, Hope is a truthful story about the struggles of daily life, and trying to find ones inner self.

If I was to describe Here, Home, Hope in 3 words:
- Heartfelt—The author touches my emotions within this story.
- Humorous—I was laughing out loud at many parts of this story.
- Truthful—The passions and struggles come alive in this novel, and I can sympathize with the characters.
