I’ve recently had the pleasure of reading and reviewing FireSong by Aaron Paul Lazar! Please read on . . .
Characters:
Gus LeGarde— Main character. Unravels a huge mystery in a small town in New York.
Camille— Gus’s wife. Supports Gus, obsesses about the history of their home.
Joe— Local sheriff. Really good friends with Gus, and they work together throughout the story.
Colin— Missing man that has ran into some trouble throughout the story.
Freddie— Gus’s daughter, single woman with 3 kids.
Siegfried— Gus’s brother-in-law from his late wife. Is the ‘rock’ in the family.
Oscar— Church parishioner who assists in the Underground Railroad case.
Dr. David & Mary Hill— First inhabitants of Gus & Camille’s house in the 1800s.
Reverend Nahum Hardina— Runs into some trouble, but provides foundation in the story.
Jaramillo— Antagonist, he is hiding something throughout this mystery.
Plot:
The story begins with a tornado causing havoc on a small-town church. After the storm, some human bones are discovered. This begins a mystery of a man that disappear named Colin Springer. When Joe comes by Gus LeGarde’s house, they begin trying to uncover some deeper, hidden facts about Colin’s disappearance and why somebody would want him dead. The next thing that happens is the Reverend Nahum and Gus do a service at the prison. A friendly warning was spoken for Nahum to ‘Watch his back.’ This leads to Jaramillo surfacing, and mysteries finally becoming unraveled.
During this entire mystery with Gus, Camille is facing her own. Dr. David and Mary Hill that used to reside in their house were found to be associated with the Underground Railroad. These were true hometown heroes, and allowed for some missing pieces to be sorted with the whole Underground Railroad history for the historians leading its path. There is a lot more to this part of the story, but I will not spoil it!
Key Notes:
I have never read a Gus LeGarde mystery before, and FireSong is book #5 in the series. The way the book was written allows for the reader to start at book #5, and not feel lost. When the author references events that occurred in the previous books, he has a footnote so you can note where that reference came from.
This book meant a lot to me. It was funny, sad, intense, and calm all at the same time. It felt like I was living in the action.
If I was to describe FireSong in 3 words:
Deep— FireSong was a very involved story that had many different dimensions. One thing led to another, and mysteries began popping up from all levels.
Intriguing— I couldn’t put this book down. After I finished a chapter, I always wanted to know what happened next. There was always something new happening.
Action-packed— Towards the beginning of the middle, the story just drops into nonstop action. This leads into me not being able to put it down. From this point on, there is 100% action until the end.
