My Home-Buying Experience!

I am participating in a blogger campaign about Kansas City Real Estate and was compensated. However, the views and opinions are my own.

Buying a home is a process driven by lots of work, companionship, and trust.  I am 23 years old, and I have lived in 3 apartments, and have bought 2 houses in my life.

The first house was a terror.  It was located in Suffolk, Virginia.  My husband and I were new to the area, and we wanted a house in the country.  We were paying $900 in rent for our apartment, and thought it would be a smart move to invest in a house for the $926 mortgage payment.  Well, this experience was not very good.  We sought a well-known real estate agent.  Working with this man was like working with a snake.  We finally settled in our new home, and we were to sign the documents 1 week after settling in.  The city came to us, and said that we couldn’t live there, because the property that was claimed to be ours was actually the cities.  Since we were under a small contract type deal, we were having to pay rent to the owners that we were buying the house from.  Our “rent” payments were $975, and we were under contract until the city could survey the land properly.  It was ridiculous, and we had no idea what we were into.  We bought all brand new appliances for the house, and we just wanted out.  The owner of the property said that the only way that he will let us out is if we left the brand new appliances.  We took the deal.  The real estate agent failed at his job, failed to inform us of this type of situation.  He did not guide us in the right direction.

In those awful weeks of home-searching, we finally found a place in Virginia Beach.  It is a 1,000 sq/ft townhouse.  We moved in here in 2008, and it has been a fantastic ride ever since.  We are gaining equity on this house, and we are updating some things around here.  The only problem with this house was minor cosmetic things.  It’s 3 years later, and I am still working to fix the cosmetic details!

I plan on moving out within the next year or so.  The market is fantastic for buyers, and we are looking for a little farmhouse on a few acres of land.  Right now, my husband and I are looking in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach, as well as Chesapeake, VA.

Buying a house is a smart decision, just be sure to know what is going on throughout the whole process.  Do some research on real estate agents, and check their ratings.  Be wary—if anything seems a little fishy to you, it probably is.
