My Review of the Silicone Cupcake Molds

What is it exactly?

     From the website. . .
"California Kitchenware Butterfield Silicone Cupcake Molds are packaged in a tube of 12 cups, making a great gift for friends or family. Four CKW signature blue, four pink and four yellow silicone cups are made to be used in the oven up to 500 degrees F, but can also be used in the freezer or microwave. The food-grade, non-stick silicone is fun for kids but uncompromising in performance."

Review…

Packaging & Presentation of the Silicone Cupcake Molds

The cupcake molds arrived in a plastic tube (one that is reusable for storing them!) wrapped in cellophane.

Here is the plastic tube after unwrapping along with the bottom of the tube which tells a neat story about the Butterfield Overland Mail Trail.

Taking them out of the pack, you can see that there are (4) pink molds, (4) blue, and (4) yellow.

My Personal Experience with the Silicone Cupcake Molds

I'll take any opportunity to make some cupcakes, so I was pretty excited when I found out that I was going to be reviewing these!  I made some pretty dang good cupcakes this evening, and I'd like to share some photos of the process using the California Kitchenware Silicone Cupcake Molds.

First, I had to make the normal preparations.  I got all of my ingredients together, and I preheated my oven.

Next, I poured the cake mix into the bowl.

Then I poured the water and oil in the bowl, too.

Since this is a white cake mix, I had to separate the yolks.  After this, I mixed the whites in the bowl with the other ingredients.

...and then I mixed it.  I decided it wasn't good enough, so I had to add some blue food coloring!

Next, I filled the molds up. Good thing you don't need a muffin tin for these since I do not have one!  I placed all 12 cupcake molds in a 9" x 13" pan, and they stood up by themselves.  They did not spill over when I put the mix in them.  After 18 minutes, I took them out of the oven.  Look how cute they look!  When I took them out of the oven, the silicone was not hot.  It was warm, but I was able to immediately pick each cupcake up with my hand and place it on the cooling rack.

After about 15 minutes of cooling time, I was finally able to frost these babies.  Yum. I also want to point out that the cupcake does not stick to the mold.  These things rock!

Cupcakes never last long in my house, so I was able to put the molds into the dishwasher, and they cleaned right up like brand new!  Just store 'em back in their plastic tube until next time!

Pros of the Silicone Cupcake Molds
  • No more buying paper or foil wrappers or wondering if you 'have some at the house'.
  • No need to use non-stick spray - the cupcakes don't stick to the silicone!
  • Withstands hot temperatures, yet doesn't burn your hands or fingertips off.
  • Comes in cute colors, or you can choose plain ones if you wish.
  • Top rack dishwasher safe (this is a pro for me!)
  • Easy for kids to unwrap while eating their treat.
  • No need for a muffin tin, which is awesome because I don't have one.
  • The price is excellent for this product.

Cons of the Silicone Cupcake Molds
  • I don't know if it was just me, but I could not remember for the life of me if you needed to spray silicone molds with nonstick spray.  I had to go find out.  It would be a bit easier if California Kitchenware would add some simple tips on their packaging label for easy reference.
Summary

I really liked these!  I had a lot of fun making cupcakes and using a silicone mold for the first time.  I had no idea what to expect, and since I used these, I'm never going back to the paper/foil molds.  The molds provided for even baking.  I recommend purchasing these; whether for a gift or for yourself.  You will LOVE them!
