Top Tips to Make Moving House Less Stressful

Moving house ranks highly when it comes to stressful life events. If you’re dealing with offers and contracts, or you’re knee deep in boxes, try not to panic. With these helpful hints, you can negotiate the moving process and start enjoying your new home.

Make a plan--

If you have a moving date, start planning as early as possible. It’s always best to get things done in advance, rather than leaving all your packing until the last minute. If you don’t have a date, you can still start preparing for your move. The first thing to do is draw up a list of jobs. You’ll need to pack up all your belongings, but there are also other tasks to tick off. You may need to contact local authorities, utility companies and your TV and broadband provider. If you have already bought a new home, and you have the keys, you can also redirect your mail.

Weigh up your options--

When it comes to moving to pastures new, there are various options open to you. Do you want to do all the packing and cleaning yourself? Are you going to hire a van and oversee the entire process? Or would you rather get a removals firm in? If you do choose a company like Two Men And A Truck, you can put your feet up and relax. The experts will take care of all your packing and safely transfer your possessions from your old home to the new property. If you get somebody in to help, you may not have to take as much time off work or worry about childcare arrangements.

If you have a tight budget, you can always rely on friends and family to help out. Make a day of it and get everyone around to pack and lift furniture and boxes. If you know somebody with a van, you may be able to call in a favor or negotiate a discount.

Pack in order--

If you are doing the packing yourself, it’s wise to stick to a rough plan. You don’t want to end up with a series of half-done rooms, or spend time frantically trawling through boxes for something you need. Before you even start packing, go through lofts, spare rooms, and garages and throw away anything you don't want to take to your new home. You could organize a yard sale, donate to charity or sell your stuff online. When you’re ready to begin packing, start with items that you won’t need before you move. If it’s the height of summer, you can pack away all your winter clothes and heavy coats, for example. Leave anything you use on a daily basis until the last minute. Make sure that all your boxes are marked clearly with their intended location in the new home.

When you’re almost ready to go and moving day has arrived, gather together some essentials and throw them in an overnight bag. This will allow you to get settled on your first night in your new home without having to start unpacking immediately.

Moving can be stressful, but these top tips will hopefully help to save you some time and effort. Good luck!
